2010 WA Youth Team Selection Day - 4th Feb 2010

Youth Team; Jade Riches, Jaiden Thompson, Kayla Rainoldi, Monique Holden.

2010 WA Youth Team Selection Day

Well Saturday 23rd January finally arrived, tho really we didn't have to wait too long, as the idea of putting together a Youth Team for two of the NSW shows really only happened late 2009. So the WAQHA committee worked really hard to put it all together.

It was short notice and many still weren't too sure what it was all about, but we did get 7 entries for the 4 positions on the Youth Team.

It was held at Magenup Riding Club in Wandi. A very different change to the usual Brookleigh or SEC that we are all used to nowadays. It had been threatening over 40 degrees the week leading up to this day, but luckily mother nature gave us a break….she gave us 36 degrees !!!! It did threaten thunderstorms, which luckily didn't eventuate until later that evening, like we needed lightning bolts, huge rain drops and 90% humidity as well.

Our selectors arrived, Brian Cramp, Vanessa Hancox and Brenda Smith, who got together to finalise their strategies and ideas for the day. Michelle Parton officiated between the selectors and the kids and their supporters. Finally the time had come to gather the kids all together in one room and Brian then gave them their "little pep talk" on what to do that day, what to expect and how it was all going to work. After their rev up, they were sent out to get their horses ready for the showmanship events.

The kids did so well, as we sat under the trees in the shade sipping on icy cool drinks and watching on as the kids sweated it out under the blistering sun without barely a whisper of complaint. They had a quick break and I mean quick to saddle up for hunter & equitation. Luckily for mums they were to have a cool down drink while mum did the horses!!!! Hope you mum's got a big thank you for all the help and support you gave the kids that day!

Can't forget too, the selectors also out there in the sun all day, unable to escape the heat if even for a few minutes to saddle up a horse. Never did we hear any complaints from them, as long as we kept them well watered throughout the day!

Out came the kids for the hunt classes, again mums and supporters under the trees, enjoying the shade, the slight breeze and cool drinks. The kids would say the best thing about Magenup, is that there is a warm up arena between the grassed area where we sat and the working arena, so the kids weren't able to hear their mum and supporters "sighing" & "tutting" when the kids didn't do something mum approved of. But that's the name of this game hey?

Another quick break, change into western gear. Again…well done mum's for the quick change, while the red faced kids again didn't complain about the heat (too much!).

Out they went for horsemanship, pleasure and trail. We had a new professional photographer out that day from Red Photo's who was enjoying the change of scenery from his normal dressage/eventing photos, he was enjoying the new type of events that he'd never seen before, even said he thought his daughter might even like a bit of western.

As the western was finishing, off went the designated ones who were doing the sausage sizzle for everyone to get it all happening. Some mum's got the bbq stuff and fruit platters happening and thanks to one wondrous male helper (Steve)…without him we wouldn't have got the bbq going.

After the food intake the kids started to relax, the selectors were then invited to make their announcement. The selectors advised how hard it was for their decision…….Drum roll please…..

Congratulations to:- Kayla Rainoldi, Monique Holden, Jaiden Thompson, Jade Riches for making the team. Now the real hard work starts, you thought that 36 degree day was hard…wait till Team Manager Holly Marshall gets hold of you! Not only the hard work of the horse side of it, but also the continual fundraising to get you there. But well done to all who tried out, and we do hope that those who didn't make it work hard over the next 12 months and are back to try again. Twelve months is a long time and loads of shows and lessons between time to get so much better and more focused.

We do hope that next year we have more youth trying out, remember kids you're all in with a chance to get in, just put in the effort with yourself and the horse and give it a go!!

What else has been happening here in the West? Well the new committee has been fairly busy with this Youth Team, Christmas did take up a lot of time too. But we had a very successful Xmas BBQ which helped raised funds for the Youth Team. Thanks to all who helped make that a HUGE success.

We have our Blue Ribbon Show on 27th & 28th Feb and our State Show in April on the Easter weekend which is in conjunction with the State Equestrian Centre's inaugural Country Fair, which will see at least 3000 spectators thru the gates and hopefully seeing our show which is based right next door to the fair. It will be a very exciting weekend for sure!!

We're planning a quiz night for April. Hope loads of members can make it. We are also planning a fancy shingdig for our AGM in September at the Burswood Entertainment Complex. So not only will our members get a change to dress up and have fun at our AGM, but also will be able to get to head on over to the casino later for a flutter or two.

We have a brand new website, so do go along have a look www.waqha.com.au. The site will continue to evolve as time goes by! So make sure you continually check in on it to see the changes, additions and updates.

There also is a West Australian Quarter Horse Association Facebook page, for all your photos, comments and discussions.

A big congratulations to Kelsie Harrington who attended shows at Tonimbuk in Victoria. Kelsie's horse had been over with Pam Neale of Snake Valley Quarter Horses for training since October. Their first show being the Yarra Valley QHA Classic show. Well done Kelsie for the following places: Feature Youth Hunter- 2nd, Western Horsemanship - 2nd, Hunter under saddle - 3rd, Hunt Seat Equitation - 2nd. The second Show was the VQHA Circuit Breaker. Results were: Senior Youth Hunter under saddle - 1st, Hunt Seat equitation - 3rd, Western Pleasure - 7th and Western Horsemanship - 6th. Her third was the VQHA State show, where she placed 2nd in the Youth Western Pleasure.

Well that's it for now. Looking forward to reporting again later in the year with how we are going here in the West.
